August 2010: Back on Track
On the first day of the school, Socrates said to his students, “Today we are going to do only one thing. You first swing your arm forward and then backward.” He demonstrated to his students how to do it. And then he asked, “From today, you have to do 300 times of arm swings everyday, can you do it?” Everybody laughed because they thought this to be too easy. One year later, Socrates asked his students how they were doing with their daily exercise of arm swing, there was only one person who persisted. This was Plato, who became one of the most famous philosophers in history.

June 2010: A Damp Summer
It’s the end of the June already, but summer seems to play the game of hide and seek with us. It’s here for a day and gone for a week. Most days we are stuck with the rain and grayness of the winter. And the nasty flu going around after that? This summer doesn’t seem to be like the usual summer, so how do you take care of yourself to avoid feeling under the weather?

Spring 2009: Green Wood Rising
My morning walks are especially delightful these days. Every day I notice more growth in my neighbors’ gardens. The timid budding Snow Drops have fully opened today. The tulips and daffodils that have poked through the earth several days ago are now almost 2 inches tall. The fuzzy buds on the Magnolia tree are pregnant with life. After a long and cold winter, the energy of dormancy is finally receding to the backdrop. Wherever I go, the “Wood” energy is vibrating in the foreground.

In Chinese Medicine, the season fall corresponds to the Lungs Organ System. The function of Lungs demonstrates to us the quintessential relationship of receiving and letting go. Can you imagine holding your breath for 10 minutes? It is this moment-to-moment letting go of the old and taking in the fresh allows us to be alive and to thrive.
